Golf is not an easy discipline, but for those athletes with the coordination, strength and ability from years of training, then a Golf Scholarship is a great pathway. Universities and colleges award Golf Scholarships to very talented golfers, which enables the athlete to participate in collegiate events, intercollegiate events and national championships. If you are a male or female athlete you are able to gain a Golf Scholarship. More professional golfers make their way to a tour card through the American college system than any other pathway
Golf Scholarships – When is the best time ?
The best time to go to the USA with a sport Scholarship is immediately after high school graduation, and up to two years after. It is recommended that athletes aged between 18 and 21 compete within the NCAA and NJCAA college leagues. Any older and you will need to consider competing in the NAIA. Coaches are increasingly committing to younger athletes as this gives them the opportunity to work with the athletes for a longer period of time. It is also possible to attend college in the USA for one, two, three or four years, depending if you wish to seek a bachelor degree from your time there. We would recommend going to America as early as possible as this will provide you with the best chance of gaining a sports Scholarship and turning professional after college.
Golf Scholarships – How good do you have to be ?
Golf Scholarships can be achieved if you are competing at a high level within your age group, within your home state or country. Very highly talented golfers, both athletically and academically, will be on the level of Division I, and the chances to receive a full Scholarship are relatively high providing you know who to contact.
In order to gain opportunities and receive higher Scholarship offers, we recommend you connect with Athletes USA. It is important that you try to participate more in national tournaments in the time prior to starting U.S college. This will show college coaches that you are able to compete at a high level.
If you are competing at national level then you have a great chance of receiving a 100% sports Scholarship in an NCAA division. Coaches will also look at an athlete’s potential, it’s a vital aspect, as coaches know from experience that even moderate athletic performance can be boosted immensely with their intensive training methods. A college recruitment coach will look at a sport CV of the athlete, photographs, video and the advice of Athletes USA staff regarding the athletes ability.

Golf training on a Golf Scholarship
If you gain a Golf Scholarship you will be expected to practice with the team for around 3-5 hours a day, 5 times a week. This would consist of Golf training and then you would still be expected to take part in additional strength and conditioning training. If you feel you are currently lacking strength in muscle and size then don’t worry. Athletes USA team members can recommend you to leading sports nutrition brands and trainers that supply our athletes with leading sports nutrition products and information on how to reach your potential in the gym.
Some Golf coaches are paid according to the success or performance of their current team or past teams. Golf practice can seem tough to internationals because you may not be used to the hard workouts and training. This intense training often allows golfers to reach previously unattained levels of fitness and performance while playing at college. Many college athletes go on to be professional after they leave university.
The Golf season
The Golf season always begins in spring (Spring Term/ January). If you are looking to join a tennis college team you need to be signed to the college team around a year before.
